Canada to accept record number of skilled migrants

27 July 2011

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says that his government recognizes the importance of nominee programs to help provinces and territories obtain the skilled migrants they need to fill labor shortages.

"That is why we plan to admit about 40,000 immigrants in the provincial nominee category in 2011, five times more than the 8,000 welcomed in 2005," he said during a speech at the Vancouver Board of Trade."

"The previous high was 36,428 provincial nominees in 2010," he added.

Post –Graduation Work Permit

In April 2008, the Government of Canada introduced important changes to its Post-Graduation work Permit program for international students, making Canada more attractive for skilled individuals. Under certain conditions, international students are now eligible to an open work permit, with no restrictions on the type of employment and no restrictions on the type of employment and no requirement for a job offer.
